The People
of Fiji |
|
The
Fijian people are truly some of the friendliest in the world.
Everywhere you go you will be greeted with friendly smiles,
waves and hellos. The children in particular love to interact
with visitors. Don't be surprised if you stop and talk with some
children you will soon have 10 to 15 more smiling faces
surrounded you and wanting to join in the conversation! |

Fiji
is is home to about 850,000 people. Almost half the population
are indigenous Fijians,
dark-skinned people of Melanesian origin, and the other half
Indians. A few percent of the population are people of Chinese
or European ancestry. Fijians are mainly Christian; the Indians
are about three quarters Hindu and one quarter Muslim. The
official language is Fijian, but English is spoken almost
universally. |
|
The
Fijians children are usually very happy, socially
well-adjusted and well-behaved. Many parents could learn
valuable lessons on child-rearing from Fijians. |

The
traditional housing has grass-thatched roofs and woven
bamboo or grass walls. Woven pandanas mats cover the floor. |
|
|
The
overall population density of Fiji is 121 per square mile
(Hawaii is 200 per square mile). About
20 percent of the people live in Suva (population, 2000,
77,366). The second and third largest urban areas are Lautoka
(36,083) and Nadi (9,170), also located on Viti Levu. Some 50
percent of Fiji’s population is rural, with most people living
in fishing or farming villages of less than 600 people. |
